    • AM Class arrive at 8:45am.
    • PM Class arrive at 12:45pm.
    • Where: MIT Media Lab, meet at 77 Massachusetts Ave., Cambridge, MA
  • Details:
    • The Lemelson-MIT Program will welcome Boy Scouts working on their Inventing merit badge at 9:00 a.m. and at 1:00 p.m. in their office located at 10-110 at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology this Saturday, March 22. Scouts will present their inventions at the beginning of each session and receive feedback from their peers and the Invention Education Officer, Leigh Estabrooks. If the inventions are too large to carry comfortably, Scouts should bring images and/or a movie of their creation. Following the presentation of the inventions, Scouts will walk across campus to visit the MIT Media Lab and work with inventor, MIT student, and Eagle Scout, Christian Reed.
    • Scouts and their parents should check-out the MIT map prior to Saturday so that boys will know where they are coming. MIT is an urban campus and the buildings are numbered in a unique, non-sequential manner. Suggested arrival time is 8:45 a.m. and 12:45 p.m. at 77 Massachusetts Avenue. This is the main entrance for MIT at Building 7. Scouts should walk down the main corridor to the next large lobby in Building 10. This is the lobby that opens to Killian Court and is "under the dome."  Turn left in Lobby 10 and go past the two elevators. 10-110 is the first office door on the left. If you go down a set of stairs, you have gone too far.
    • The Lemelson-MIT Program and Ms. Estabrooks were instrumental in the development of the Inventing merit badge in 2010. The Program was established in 1994 at the nation's premier technological university, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, by one of the world's most prolific inventors, Jerome Lemelson (1923-1997), and his wife, Dorothy. It is funded by the Lemelson Foundation and administered by MIT's School of Engineering. The Lemelson-MIT Program recognizes outstanding inventors, encourages sustainable new solutions to real-world problems, and enables and inspires young people to pursue creative lives and careers through invention.
    • Parking is free in MIT lots on Saturdays. Hayward Lot is large and near the MIT Media Lab where the Scouts will end their field trip to MIT. This may be a good place to park after dropping Scouts off at 77 Massachusetts Avenue. If this lot is full, there are commercial lots in the area. Most street parking requires quarters for meters; the City of Cambridge is very efficient when it comes to ticketing so please make sure you bring quarters just in case you need to use a metered, on-road parking space.

  • When:
    • Morning session: Sat, 22 Mar, 8:30 AM-11:30 AM
    • Afternoon session: Sat, 22 Mar, 1:00p-4:00p
  • What:
    • A field trip guided by a Google employee (1-1.5 hours)
    • Working on Merit Badge requirements (the rest of the time)
  • Who:
    • Our hosts have asked that we limit the number of guests on the field trip.  There's room for all of the Scouts and the counselors, and two or three parents.  Parents, let us know if you'd be interested in coming on the tour, and we'll sign you up on a first-ask, first-serve basis.  For parents who aren't able to go on the tour, but need a place to be, we're trying to find a lobby or cafeteria or something where you can hang out.
    • If Scouts didn't bring your permission form last Saturday, please bring it on the 22nd
  • Where:
    • Google Boston at 5 Cambridge Center, Cambridge, MA 02142
    • Parking: unfortunately there is no free public parking at Google.  You'll probably want to plan this beforehand and plan to give yourselves 15 minutes or so of buffer time on the 22nd to make sure you have time to park.  Here are some options to consider:
    • Take the subway and get off at the Kendall/MIT stop.  Personally, I'll probably park at Alewife and take the subway in
    • Look for nearby metered parking (may or may not be available)
    • Park in a nearby garage
  • To bring: See section in Finishing Requirements in left column.
  • Finishing requirements:
    • Thanks to those who did your homework beforehand.  Between the homework and what we went over on Saturday, you should be well on your way to being prepared to pass off most of the requirements.  We hope to have time to officially sign off as much as you're prepared to do on the 22nd.  The requirements for getting your blue cards signed will be no more and no less than what the BSA specifies.
    • To pass off the requirements, you'll probably want to bring:
      • A notebook with discussion points and notes for safety, history of programming, intellectual property etc.  You'll find relevant information in the slides we went over on Saturday, but may need to search around the Web a little to fill things out.  We didn't cover #6, but there should be plenty of information online to be prepared to discuss careers.
      • Your laptop to show us what you've done for requirement 5
      • Your signed cyberchip chard
      • We'll have time to work together some on the 22nd, but your greatest chance of success will be to have done the requirement beforehand and be ready to pass them off.  We understand that especially requirement 5 will be challenging - if you're not ready on the 22nd we'll be happy to pass off what you have and can schedule time to work with you later on as well.

  • When: Saturday, March 22, 2014
    • AM class: 8:00am
    • PM class: 1:00pm
  • Details:
    • The field trip on March 22 will be a visit to the McAuliffe-Shepherd Discovery Center in Concord, NH along with rocket launching.  The AM session will meet at the Nashua LDS Church at 8:00 am and carpool up.  The PM session will meet at the Nashua LDS church at 1 pm.
    • Before the field trip build a model rocket (we will not be doing this during the first session on March 8th). Plan a second launch to accomplish a specific objective (we will launch the rockets twice).  Use of A engines is recommended (you will likely lose your rocket if you launch over 500', we usually lose 2 or 3 rockets each year because they float too far away and get stuck in trees).  We recommend getting the Baby Bertha model rocket kit if you are a first-time rocketeer.  It's cheap, easy to build, takes a beating, and looks great.  Get the A8-3 engines so it doesn't float too far.
